This song i composed around a poem carved into a cave at Crantock Bay. A lament carved into stone by a man called Joseph Prater.
Local legend recalls that sometime between 1800AD - 1900AD a young woman on horseback got cut off by the tide in a cave not far from Vugga Cove on Crantock beach. from which both the young woman and horse drowned. It is said that the woman was either Joseph Prater's wife or lover, but the identity of the woman is unknown. All that is known in local tales is that Joseph, heartbroken by the loss of his true love, carved an image of her face and a poem into the wall of the cave where she died. Depending on tide and the height of the sand (which changes daily), the carvings can still be seen ! Whether Joseph composed the poem is not known either, but the words are beautifully poignant...
